National Simultaneous Storytime and Early Childhood Literacy

SICS Radio 26 May, 2022

This month’s edition of SICS Radio celebrates National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS). Organised every year by the Australian Library and Information Association, NSS involves readings of a chosen Australian picture book at libraries, schools, bookshops, childcare centres and homes across Australia. This year’s NSS was on Wednesday 25 May and an estimated 2 million children and adults heard readings of Josh Pyke and Ronojoy Ghosh’s wonderful book Family Tree. This show ends with a reading of that book, but before then we hear from three librarians – Tracy Hawkins, from the State library of Western Australia, Kylie Carlson from Yarra Libraries in Melbourne, and Michelle Swales from the State Library of Queensland. They explain why reading to children is so important, and describe the amazing programs they run to support early childhood literacy.
