“Masculinity Matters”: Michael Flood and Stephen Burrell on What Works in Violence Prevention
2 October, 2025
Conversations for a Brave New World is produced by the Gender Network (feminist, gender and queer research and practice) at CSU. We bring global, national and local issues about gender to the Central West. Each month, we share knowledge, scholarship and research about gender from the diverse perspectives of experts and scholars.
This month, Donna closes the Masculinity Matters series with Professor Michael Flood and Dr Stephen Burrell to ask a practical question: what actually works to prevent men’s violence? Building on last month’s discussion of how masculinities are made, this episode addresses violence-prevention programs, what they are and how to scale them across different contexts. Our guests argue that engaging men and boys is essential, and that prevention must tackle structural and cultural drivers. They outline three guiding principles: keep the work rooted in feminism, design it to improve men and boys’ lives, and make it intersectional.
