‘Losing It’: A Conversation with Jess Hill on Ending Gendered Violence
4 June, 2025
Conversations for a Brave New World is produced by the Gender Network (feminist, gender and queer research and practice) at CSU. We bring global, national and local issues about gender to the Central West. Each month, we share knowledge, scholarship and research about gender from the diverse perspectives of experts and scholars.
In this episode of Conversations for a Brave New World, Donna is joined by award-winning journalist and author Jess Hill to talk about the rise of gendered violence in Australia and the urgent need for deeper, systemic change. Drawing on her latest Quarterly Essay, Losing It: Can We Stop Violence Against Women and Children?, Jess unpacks the troubling escalation of violence, the role of coercive control, and how current laws can be optimised to protect women. The conversation also explores the unique challenges facing First Nations women and children, the dangers of common misconceptions about violent perpetrators and parenting, and the particular nuances of gendered violence in rural and regional communities. An unflinching and essential discussion for anyone concerned about justice, safety, and meaningful reform.
