The programs in January and February feature the eight Radio Ballads produced for the BBC in the late 1950s and early 1960s by Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger and Charles Parker. Each Radio Ballad of approximately 60 minutes makes up most of the second half of each program.
The third program in the series, ‘Singing the Fishing’, features the men and women of the herring fishing fleets of East Anglia and Northeast Scotland. It was released on August 16, 1960. It was based on 250 tapes of conversation with fishermen and their families. The program reveals the tough lives of these hardworking people, dominated by the herring trade and full of insightful humour, in their everyday speech and the songs inspired by the richness of their tales.
