Rural LGBTQ+ Experiences
4 December, 2024
Conversations for a Brave New World is produced by the Gender Network (feminist, gender and queer research and practice) at CSU. We bring global, national and local issues about gender to the Central West. Each month, we share knowledge, scholarship and research about gender from the diverse perspectives of experts and scholars.
Rural LGBTQ+ people still report poorer mental health outcomes compared to LGBTQ+ people who live in metropolitan cities. One explanation for this is that rural communities as conservative spaces expect residents to conform to heteronormative roles. In this episode, we speak with Dr Ruby Grant from ARCSHS at La Trobe, and Gavin Prendergast from ACON about the experiences of LGBTQ+ people in rural communities. ACON provides dedicated support for LGBTQ+ people in rural communities and you can access information about the services they provide by clicking here.
